Sorry not to have been around, but life and work are getting in the way of blogging, as ever. I was interested to hear today that things seem to be developing a bit with the projected feature film of Jane Eyre . Originally, Juno star Ellen Page was supposed to be playing the title role, but she dropped out a while ago and now it is said that the heroine will be played by Mia Wasikowska, who is also playing Alice in the new Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland, with Michael Fassbender as Mr Rochester. Here’s a link to the full information at Variety.

Hi Judy!
I am still wondering why they are planning yet another adaptation of Jane Eyre. After seeing the stellar performances of Toby and Ruth, I see no room for improvement! Another case in point of a “recycled” movie in my view! Why, oh why, don’t they develop dramas of lesser known novels?
Baffled by the BBC…
Hi Charley! I’m puzzled too – I suppose as this one is a feature film it would be different in that way, and I do always like to see different versions of ‘Jane Eyre’, but this does seem too soon! I’d love to see the BBC adapt ‘Villette’, which I don’t think has ever been done… but I don’t suppose it will ever happen. Bronteblog also points out that Michael Fassbender had already been announced to play Heathcliff in yet another ‘Wuthering Heights’ – can we really have the same actor playing both those parts in a short time? Though I suppose it’s unlikely both movies will go ahead.
If I understand correctly, Fassbender has been replaced by Ed Westwick in WH, along with Gemma Arterton replacing Abbie Cornish so he won’t be taking on dual Bronte roles, for now anyway! Wuthering Heights is another one that’s already been done to death. (It doesn’t help that it’s one that’s never appealed to me in the first place.)
As for Villette, I’ve heard many who echo your desire to see this one adapted! I’ve not read it so I am now curious to find out more!
btw, I didn’t know who Fassbender was but turns out I’ve seen him in a film a few years back. ‘A Bear Named Winnie’ based on the bear that inspired A.A. Milne. I now own the DVD so I should watch again! http://enchantedserenityperiodfilms.blogspot.com/2009/05/bear-named-winnie.html
Thanks for the update, Charley, and for the link to the info on your site about the movie ‘A Bear Called Winnie’, which sounds well worth watching. Fassbender was also one of the stars of the English Civil War series ‘The Devil’s Whore’ and I thought he was good, although he seems very young and handsome to play Rochester – then again, that didn’t stop Toby Stephens from being excellent in the role!
I want to also add my support to Villette! There was a mini series done in 1970 or 1972 by the BBC and it was never shown again. That’s the only adaptation there is of that wonderful novel.
I hadn’t realised it had been adapted at all, so thanks for that, Ailatan. Just checked at the imdb and it was in 1970, when I was nine or ten, so just a little too young to be interested – there were five episodes starring Judy Parfitt as Lucy Snowe and Peter Jeffrey as Paul Emmanuel, so a really good costume drama cast. I loved Judy Parfitt as Mrs Clennam in the recent ‘Little Dorrit’! It’s a shame this version has never resurfaced as a video or DVD.
Another adaptation of “JANE EYRE”?? Why? There have already been three adaptations between 1996 and 2006.
Couldn’t agree more! It’s infuriating that this novel keeps getting adapted time and again while others never get a look in. Having said that, I’m sure I’ll still go to see this latest adaptation, if it does get made.
